Validation Procedure

Validation is required for Dairy and Beef Commercial Heifers, Market Lambs, Market Steers, Commercial Ewes, Market Goats, Commercial Does and Market Swine for the 2027 LSU AgCenter State Livestock Show. This year the validation process has changed and is mandatory to have parish validations in a central location. This year's validation day is scheduled for Saturday, November 7, 2026, at the Chauncey Pitre Memorial Barn beginning at 9:00 a.m. All exhibitors will be asked to let Mrs. Kim know how many animals they will be validating by October 10, 2026.

Exhibitor Responsibility

Animals must be in continuous possession of exhibitor from time of validation until the LSU AgCenter State Livestock Show. See rules in LSU AgCenter State Show catalog or consult the livestock show manager for specific possession rules.

Validation will consist of ear tagging animal and pulling a hair sample; hair sample should be placed in a properly identified validation envelope for each animal validated.

Animals previously tagged for the for Louisiana State Fair may utilize the State Fair tag to complete LSU AgCenter State Show validations. All animals must be tagged with either an LSU tag or State Fair tag to be validated. New hair samples must be submitted to LSU AgCenter for all animals previously validated for the State Fair.

Animals must be validated in either the exhibitors name or in family name. Family consist of parents, legal guardians, brother, and sisters. When official entry in the fair entry system is submitted at the parish level animals validated in family name must be entered in the name of the exhibitor that will show the animal at the District and State Livestock Shows.

*Registered (papered) breeding animals are validated by uploading their registration papers in the 4-H Online system in the animal section.


2026 Validation Day - November 7, 2026:

Livestock Validation for LSU AgCenter Events

We are now required to hold a validation day for Market and Commercial Goats, Market and Commercial sheep, and Commercial cattle. This will be held at the Chauncey Pitre Multipurpose facility on November 7, 2026, from 9am to 12pm.Exhibitors and parents are required to bring all market and commercial animals. Animals will remain in the trailer or carrier.Superintendents and agents will assist exhibitors and parents in the correct procedures for this process.

*New Rule from LSU Ag Center State Livestock Program for validation: (See below)

The responsibility of entering animal info into 4-H online, ear tagging animals, and collecting DNA and/or hair samples will be that of the exhibitor and/or parent. Agents/FFA advisor MUST be present and can assist. Animals previously tagged for the 2024 Louisiana State Fair may utilize the State Fair TAG to complete LSU AgCenter State Show validations. New DNA samples must be submitted to LSU AgCenter for all animals previously validated for the State Fair. Animals must be validated in the exhibitor’s name that will show the animals at the Parish, District, and State Livestock Shows.

Exhibitors who show Market and Commercial Hogs and Market and Exhibition Rabbits must notify the 4-H office by the dates listed below that they will show and a Validation visit to their home will be set up by Mrs. Kim Deville.

Swine exhibitors must notify our office by November 6th if they will show this year.

Rabbit exhibitors must notify our office by November 30th if they will show this year.

Validation for ALL ANIMALS BEING SHOWN will consist of:

  • Exhibitors enter their animals in 4-H Online before the possession deadline. Remember: ALL ANIMALS MUST BE IN 4-H ONLINE BY THIS DATE TO SHOW. (Registered and market)
  • Ear tagging animal.
  • Collecting hair samples with roots attached and/or DNA sample; hair sample should be placed in a properly identified validation envelope for each animal validated. Validation envelopes with fee must be completed by the specified deadline.

Validation Due Dates are as follows:

Market Steers are due August 11, 2026

Commercial Beef, Dairy Heifer, Market Lambs, Commercial Ewes, Market Goats, and Commercial Does are due November 7, 2026

Market Swine are due December 1, 2026; however, you are asked to notify Mrs. Kim of the number of tags you will need no later than November 6, 2026.
